A Band Called Wendy consists of Bob Basa on bass guitar, Geoff Hlibka on electric and acoustic guitars, Dave Patel on drums and Wendy Irvine on vocals. All of these crazy cats are accomplished musicians, who have great command of their instruments, a lot of feel, a lot of soul and a lot of sweet, sweet groovyness! They shake up the house and put on a show like there is no tomorrow! Our vocalist, Wendy Irvine, has been performing since the tender age of three (singing with her mother in hospitals and Senior Citizens homes, and lip-sinking Chaka Khan to her parents!). At
the age of five, Wendy began to study piano, and her first taste of a
theatrical stage came at age eight, when she played in the musical 'Annie'
(with a long line of musicals, theatre, and film work to follow). At age
twelve she took up the clarinet, and at fifteen she began to teach others
to sing, to play the piano and the clarinet, as well as teaching music
theory. Recently, she has started her hand at guitar! When the decision to make music her career came at eighteen, she produced her first annual 'Wendy Irvine and Friends' show that continues to be successful year after year. She has now brought a similar show to the Toronto scene, to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society and The Heart and Stroke Foundation. The OPEN Celebration! was such a success, that the decision has been made to make this an annual event as well! She writes most of the material for the band, sings her heart out with a powerful voice, and prior to 'a band called Wendy,' she busied herself on the Toronto scene singing a variety of musical styles from jazz, big band and blues, to rock, funk and hip hop hooks. Basically, playing and singing as much as she could! She has been guest vocalist for other Canadian writers, as well as singing voice-overs in commercials, before she celebrated the release of her first solo CD, 'Blasé Day'. Bob Basa, Mr. Bass-man, has 16 years of playing experience, which has gained him a great reputation in the Toronto music scene. His solid groove, easygoing demeanor, versatility and professional attitude have kept him booked throughout the years, and is undeniably impressive to both audiences and fellow musicians alike. You've got to hear this man get down live, when he's jammin' an' bringin' on the super-funky bass! Bob is always busy playing and recording with various acts such as Andi Duncan, hey Vera, Carlo Coppola, Johnny Acosta and he has recorded and toured with flamenco guitarist and Warner Recording artist, Robert Michaels. Our drummer boy, Dave Patel, provides the rhythm that always keeps us together and has been on the music scene for twelve years now. He is the human clik trak, and whenever he gets behind those drums, you know the band's gonna hit you with a hip sound you've got to move your feet to! He's not only been sharing his craft on the stage and in the studio, but he's also been teaching, and passing on his excellence, since 1991. Dave has performed and recorded with acts such as Simon Wilcox, Bill Usher, Robert Michaels, Juke Joint, Planet Earth and Bass is Base, to name a few. Our talented Mr. Geoff Hlibka, with his funky lines and slick licks keep us all movin' to the groovin' when he lets his guitar sing. He knows exactly when to lay on the sweet sounds, be it on a nice, slow jam or a kickin' get-your-rump bumpin' kinda track. Geoff is a busy Toronto area guitarist. He graduated with honours from the Humber College Music Program in 1992. While there, he studied with the late Peter Harris, head of the guitar department, as well as one of Toronto's top session guitarists, Tony Zorzi. In his years in the music industry, he has had the pleasure of performing with acts such as Blue Rodeo, Kim Mitchell and April Wine, as well as working in the early days with Amanda Marshall. |
